INFO: Inscribed on front free endpaper - Dr Lyon Playfair from JA (John Adamson). Handwritten note below states ' 1st stereo portrait in the history of the stereoscope - Sir D Brewster of Dr Adamson'. BIOG: Dr John Adamson (1809-1870). He was educated in St Andrews and went to Edinburgh, graduating with a diploma in Surgery in 1829. He practised in Paris and as ship's surgeon on a voyage to China, returning to set up a practice in St Andrews in 1935. He sat his M.D Examination in 1843. He was a member and the curator of the St Andrews Literary and Philosophical Society from 1838. He practised and studied the calotype process from 1841 changing to the collodion process in 1851. His brother Robert became a professional photographer in partnership with artist, D. O Hill.
